Lutron HomeWorks vs Control4 for a Manhattan Penthouse

This one is a frequent question on penthouse and townhouse projects. The short answer: Lutron HomeWorks and Control4 do different things and most high-end NYC homes use both.

What each does

Lutron HomeWorks is the lighting and shading control platform. It does that job better than anything else in residential. Engraved keypads, scene programming, dimming quality, and dealer-grade ongoing support all live here.

Control4 is the whole-home automation and AV control platform. It ties together AV, climate, security, access, and the Lutron HomeWorks system itself under one remote, one app, and one set of scenes.

In other words: HomeWorks runs the lights and shades. Control4 runs everything else and talks to HomeWorks.

The integration

A well-programmed integration means:

  • A single button on a Control4 remote dims the lights, lowers the shades, and starts a movie.
  • A Lutron keypad scene called “Dinner” can trigger Control4 to mute the AV and bring up a lighting scene.
  • Voice commands route to the right system without the homeowner caring which platform handles what.

When you’d use Control4 alone

Smaller residential projects (under $20K of AV scope) sometimes use Control4’s panelized lighting (the Wired and Wireless Dimmers) instead of HomeWorks. Capable, cost-effective, and fine for projects that don’t need engraved keypads or HomeWorks-grade dimming. Not the right pick for a true high-end penthouse where dimming quality matters.

When you’d use HomeWorks alone

If the project is lighting and shading only with no significant AV, Control4 isn’t required. HomeWorks plus the Lutron app is enough.

When you need both

Anytime the project includes:

  • Distributed audio or a serious media room
  • A theater
  • Multi-source AV control
  • Integration with cameras and access control
  • A homeowner who wants one app for everything

That’s most NYC penthouse projects, and that’s why most of them run both.

Cost framing

For a 4,000-square-foot penthouse with full lighting, shading, AV, and home automation:

  • HomeWorks lighting and shading: $80,000 to $150,000 installed and programmed.
  • Control4 with full AV integration: $40,000 to $90,000 installed and programmed.
  • Combined integration programming (the part that ties them together): $5,000 to $15,000.

FAQ

Can Control4 control Lutron Caseta or RA3 instead of HomeWorks?

Yes. Caseta and RA3 are common picks for projects that don’t justify HomeWorks. The integration is the same approach.

Will Control4 work with a competitor lighting system like Crestron?

Yes, with caveats. Crestron Home is a complete competing platform; integrating it with Control4 is unusual and not recommended. You’d typically pick one ecosystem.

Does HomeWorks integrate with Savant?

Yes, the same way it integrates with Control4. Choose Savant or Control4 based on your dealer relationship and the scope.
